Unboxing and Device Verification

The Keystone 3 Pro arrives in a secure box with a tamper-evident strip. Inside, you'll find the device itself, a USB-C cable, some seed phrase recovery cards, and a large touchscreen interface featuring a camera and a fingerprint sensor.

When you power it on, the very first step is verifying the device's authenticity. The device will display a QR code. Using a privacy browser (like Brave with Tor), navigate to the official verification URL provided, scan the QR code with your webcam, and ensure your hardware has not been tampered with in transit.

Firmware Update via Micro SD

The Keystone 3 Pro supports three different firmware versions: Multicoin, Cipher Punk (privacy coins and Bitcoin), and Bitcoin-only. Being a Bitcoin-only advocate, I strongly recommend installing the Bitcoin-only firmware. Because we are setting this up as a fully airgapped device, we will update the firmware using a micro SD card rather than connecting the device directly to a computer.

  1. Download the official Bitcoin-only firmware from Keystone's website to a clean micro SD card.
  2. Insert the micro SD card into the device (pins facing up).
  3. Ensure the device has at least 40% battery and is plugged into a power source (not your PC).
  4. Select "SD Card Update" and allow the process to complete.

Creating Your Wallet and Passphrase

Once updated, it's time to create the wallet. You will first be prompted to create a PIN (or enable the fingerprint sensor) to protect the device. I highly recommend making this PIN robust.

You can then generate a standard 12 or 24-word seed phrase. The device will generate the words, which you must carefully write down. It will then ask you to confirm the words by tapping them in order.

Crucial Security Step: I highly advise enabling a passphrase (sometimes referred to as the 13th or 25th word). This creates a hidden wallet, meaning even if someone discovers your physical seed phrase backup, they cannot access your funds without the passphrase. Make sure to store your passphrase in a separate physical location from your seed phrase!

Connecting to Sparrow Wallet

The Keystone 3 Pro interface is incredibly simple because it relies on open-source companion apps (like Sparrow or Nunchuk) to view your balance and build transactions. The Keystone itself merely acts as a secure, offline signing device.

  1. On your Keystone, go to Settings > Connection and enable Air Gap Mode. This completely disables the USB port for data transfer, ensuring it can only be used for charging.
  2. Select Connect Software Wallet and choose Sparrow.
  3. Open Sparrow Wallet on your desktop, select "Import Wallet", choose Keystone, and click "Scan".
  4. Hold your Keystone up to your webcam. Sparrow will read the animated QR codes and import your public key information (xpub).
  5. Verify the Master Fingerprint displayed on Sparrow matches the one in your Keystone's device settings.

Sending an Airgapped Transaction

Sending Bitcoin is seamless:

  1. Build the transaction in Sparrow by pasting the destination address and setting the fee.
  2. Click "Show QR Code" in Sparrow.
  3. On your Keystone, tap "Scan" and scan the transaction QR code from your computer monitor.
  4. Carefully verify the destination address and amount on the offline Keystone screen. If everything is correct, sign the transaction using your PIN or fingerprint.
  5. The Keystone will generate a new set of signed QR codes. Use Sparrow's "Scan QR" feature via your webcam to read the signed transaction back into your computer.
  6. Broadcast the transaction to the network via Sparrow!

Final Thoughts

The Keystone 3 Pro offers a fantastic user experience. The large touchscreen makes navigating and scanning QR codes effortless. While you are still trusting the device's random number generator in this basic setup, the device does support dice roll entropy generation for a more trust-minimized setup, which I will cover in a future video!
